Mumbai Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

Arriving in Mumbai and traveling in to the old area around the Gateway of India  was rather different from our road experience in Udaipur! Not too many camels! But nevertheless a little intimidating..... lots of traffic and our taxi did not have seat belts.  So 50 mins with sheer panic at times.....
Sunset over the Arabian sea on our way in from airport.................

We arrived shaken but intact at the Taj Mahal Palace.......

and were happy to find that they had upgraded us from the tower suite with sea view to a suite in the old part of the hotel with a sea view.

When I asked why, I was told they were trying to show that everything had returned to normal and they wanted to encourage people to book there.  This was where the terrorist attack played out in 2008. They also said that the Tower part wasn't really their type of hotel!  i.e. modern!!

We had dinner in Masala Kraft, their indian restaurant, where the food was excellent.

The view from our room in the morning at sunrise was superb......

And a little later we were able to appreciate the Gateway......

We sat in their outdoor courtyard/pool area for lunch,

which was very relaxing after experiencing the busy traffic outside..............

Yes, that is a cow stopped at the lights.......one block from the hotel!

Which is pretty amazing when you consider that the population of the greater Mumbai area is around 20 million!  The largest city in India and the fourth largest in the world. And they have cows on the streets!

We didn't take a horse drawn carriage.... but they looked nice.......

On the way back out to the airport we did see many of the slums Mumbai is famous for..............

And had flown in over vast expanses of them when landing at the airport.

These were facing the gates of the Four Seasons Hotel!

We bought some Bollywood DVDs at the airport when leaving ( to use up the last of our rupees!) and one of them was Slumdog Millionaire.  We have now watched this movie again in both the Indian version and the US version, to compare.  The Hindi version didn't seem to have english sub-titles, even though it was supposed to have, as per the box!  So it was interesting to just watch!!
And having bought the DVDs on leaving we can't exactly return them as defective!

Our next mornings view from the airport hotel in Dubai was a little different from the prior day..............
